Of the three chess-inspired pieces created for a martial arts gym’s bathroom signage, the knight may have the most unusual backstory. This one was designed for the accessible restroom — and, in a moment of what I can only describe as questionable creative confidence, I thought: why not a horse? After all, between wheelchairs, movement aids, and life generally refusing to fit neatly into boxes, perhaps a horse didn’t feel entirely out of place.
Jokes aside, the knight felt strangely fitting. In chess, it is the unconventional piece — moving differently from all the others and navigating the board in its own way. There’s something quietly admirable about that.
Visually, I wanted the piece to feel noble, playful, and strong — carrying a sense of dignity while still embracing a touch of humor. What began as functional signage became something more symbolic: a small tribute to individuality, resilience, and the idea that moving through the world differently does not make someone any less powerful.
